Native Diver's Burial Site and Paulick Report

I hope people will weigh-in on Paulick’s article regarding Native Diver’s remains and then follow-up by contacting Mr. Liebau and Mr. Wyatt at Hollywood Park. It is so important that they, Hollywood Park, know that people are concerned that they have no idea as to how to remove remains that have been in the ground for 46 years. Hollywood Park has given no indication that they have a clue as to how to remove the remains of a dead horse.

Even Man o’ War’s removal, and that of his sons, from Faraway Farm was not without incident. My god, has anyone seen what has happened to Native Diver’s monument thanks to Del Mar? They can’t even figure out how to move that!

  • I heard on tvg that they are going to bring in specialists to find his bones cuz its going to be hard, they cant just dig and there u go. Its been very long since he was burried, horse bones turn brown and blend into the dirt, sort of decompose unlike those of cattle or any other animal. But they are working on removing him
  • When did TVG report this? No one at Hollypark has said anything about what they plan to do about this. I am aware what the remains look like; I was there with Noor and that is why I am so concerned. They have one shot at this . . .

CAF, what's the deal with the Native Diver monument? What went wrong? BTW, I so appreciate your efforts and I am grateful there is a fan who has become an expert on this subject..exhuming horses remains. All those years ago who would have thought that this was going to be become such a quagmire. I know there was a discussion on another thread on this forum, but what happened with Landaluce?

I think that the monument is so heavy they are having difficulty...at least that is what seems to be the problem from what I have been reading...could be wrong
  • they announced it yesterday on TVG
  • Landeluce is going to Spendthrift farm
  • Landeluce is going to Spendthrift farm
    Has she been exhumed yet?
  • i have no idea, but when DRF came out with the article on it thats what it said
  • Rachel is correct; Landaluce's cremated remains are destined for Spendthrift Farm if they are not already there. Great Communicator's heart is headed for Old Friends and his headstone, which was already removed and that of Luce's, was to be sent to Thad Ackel. As for Luce's stone I have no idea. I missed that announcement; I wish there was a way I could get a recap. I will check the DRF too.
  • I checked and double checked; could not find anything regarding tvg or about bringing in specialists.
  • Well thats what i heard when i was watching TVG, thays exactly what was said

both Landaluce's and Great Communicators headstones were dug up and in the racing office at Hollywood Park within the first week after HP closed. They were to be shipped back to KY to go with their respective remains.
  • as far as the diver monument being too heavy, that will be a cop out if they say that. theres NOTHING that cant be moved with a crane and loaded onto a truck and transported.so if they try n say that, its totall bullshit..ive seen houses moved on flatbed trucks
  • Rachel ~ Please don't get me wrong; I am not saying that you didn't hear what you heard. I am saying I couldn't find anything, which I wish I could. I would love to know what their definition of "specialists" means.
  • people with a radar system or something to be able to see in the ground where exactly his bones are so that they are digging in the right spot. bones shift around after a long while, they just wanna make sure
  • Kurt ~ You are a person after my own heart. Joe Harper of Del Mar gave the excuse that "they" were the vandals who messed up Diver's monument trying to see how much of the memorial was salvageable. They have the cup and will be taking the tiles with an architect working on plans that will "fit" Del Mar. Big whoop! Rachel you are right about using Ground Pentrating Radar; it does work . . .

You tape off the bloody monument and then use a "diamond saw" to cut it in pieces and then transport to Del Mar and reassemble. Geez, they don't care and that is why I have concerns about the removing of Diver's remains. There was a posting by Ron Hale on the article that Paulich did on Diver wherein he states he arrived after Diver was in the ground; well, then, why couldn't he identify the location and then the track could bring in archeologists (free of charge) to assist in removing the remains? No one except an expert archeologist would be able to identify the changes in soil content. They could dig right through him. Also, is it a symbolic lift; removing only what fragments of bones they can find or removing all that was Diver? Makes me sick to my stomach . . . Diver deserves so much better than this.
  • ....use a "diamond saw" to cut it in pieces and then transport to Del Mar and reassemble.

    Are you serious? They didn't!
  • U mean they couldnt lift it and transport it? :(
  • CAF definitely knows what she is talking about here. So, are we saying they just didn't do that or didn't know to do that? I'm confused about it.
  • that thing is NOT that big or heavy, if they cut it up, its because they didnt want to spend the money to lift and transport it properly
  • First ~ The monument is still there; they don't seem to know what to do other than what Harper said, ". . . they will be taking the tiles with an architect working on plans that will "fit" Del Mar." So, with that statement I am getting the impression that it will be a new work of art not what Mr. and Mrs. L. K. Shapiro had dedicated to their beloved horse. Geez, when Ramses and his queen were moved to make room for the Aswan Dam in Egypt they taped of and cut into pieces reassembling in the new location. It wouldn't cost that much . . . diamond saws are used to cut concrete everyday and also, novel idea, ask an archeologist how to do it.

You are right Kurt, they want to take the easiest cheapest route; that is why Harper said that they have an architect working on plans that will FIT Del Mar. Forget preserving the old one.

So, where does that leave Diver . . . not in a good spot. I have come so close to calling Harper and Liebau but it will do no good when only my name keeps getting attached to this. It will begin to look as if I have a vendetta. Remember, unless some sort of contract was signed between the two tracks regarding ownership of Diver; Diver still BELONGS to Hollywood Park. They are the owners of his remains and have the say.

I can overlook the mess they have made regarding moving the monument but I can't let go of the fact that they need to do right by Diver otherwise he will become a permanent fixture of that location; later to reside under some sort of structure.

    Any suggestions people?

  • im still sad that Swaps is staying :( its not right what they are doing to the monument

Hi Rachel.....is Swaps buried there too? Never heard that .....or is it a memorial?
  • its his memorial, the one where hes in full stride with the jockey on his back. the memorial sculpture is going to stay there and be used as a greeting to the entrance of the park
  • i dont like the idea cuz whats Swaps without his track?
