hey guys, made a roadie yesterday to Santa Ynez to a place called Magali farm. Magali stands 7 stallions and boards over 100 mares full time and expands to over 250 during breeding season. we were there over an hour and were given the full tour. the farm is VERY fan friendly and encourages visitors so if your in the area, give them a call or an email. we visited the training track, the breeding shed, foaling barn, yearling paddocks and of course the stallion barn. we had expected to just see two stallionsas that was who i asked about in my email. those two being COIL and RICHARDS KID. we got to see four as ATTICUS was in his paddock close by as we were riding around in the gold cart so we stopped and visited the former world record holder who looks really good at 22 years of age. after riding around and seeing everything, we finished at the stallion barn and saw,in order, RICHARDS KID,COIL and GOOD JOURNEY who was the other bonus stallion. RK is now 9 and about to start his stallion career. hes starting to fill out,the stallion manager said he was really thin when he arrived..TOO thin as he put it..hes not a big fan of his former trainer. RK has put on close to 200 lbs and they want him to gain another 100..thats how thin he was when they arrived.
COIL, is a 6 year old son of former horse of the year Point given who looks alot like his sire. coil has grown to 16.3 hands and is nicely muscled. his first foals are now on the ground..we saw 3 of them(pics attached) there all big, nice looking foals so the farm is excited about them
final stallion we saw was GOOD JOURNEY who i admit i dont know alot about other then hes the managers favorite and is 19 years old. enjoy..

    Hi Kurt...
looked up Good Journey for pedigree...two things jumped at me...he is a son of Nereyev...misspelled ....and about 2 back on mom's side is Damascus...
  • How great that you got to see these guys, Kurt! I've always been a fan of Richard's Kid, and Coil. Glad to see them doing so well. Thanks for pics.

Is this the Santa Ynez in San Diego County near Julian? If it is, I'm going to go see it too because I have discovered a Thoroughbred breeding farm near Ramona on the Old Julian Road, and there is an AQHA farm also near Ramona that is on MareStare. I guessed that there were other farms around the area, because there are some named farms listed on the google map. The TB farm is the one where the stallion whose name I forgot for now is the full brother of Life Is Sweet. He was mentioned yesterday somewhere in the Z Forum, but I don't have time to hunt it up now. I figure a trip to those farms down south is as close as I'll ever get to visiting the farms in Kentucky. Ramona is only about 85 miles from me.
  • Thank you Kurt. These are great pictures, as usual. I noticed Richard's Kid has eyes like Slew. They all look great, especially the foals. So cute.
  • VA- this farm is NORTH of LA. its right next to solvang which is north of santa barbara.
as for farms in Ramona, there is Golden Eagle, Ballena Vista and A&E..and probably others. golden eagle stands STORMIN FEVER. A&E stands GAME PLAN and SOUL OF THE MATTER and is also hom to TURKOMAN..although ive been told hes just about done and is barely hanging on at 32. BALLENA is the one you wanna hit, its home to Tribal Rule, idiot proof, dixie chatter, benchmark, eddington, Bertrando(pensioned) and a few more. been to all of em, all are great
  • Thanks, kurt, for all the info. I think the Solvang area is a little too far for a day trip for me. Can't afford a pet sitter for an overnight. Also don't like to leave my house for long during fire season, which never ended this year, so it's going to be a hazardous year ahead.
  • VA- i have a feeling were not to far apart..are you in the 909?
  • Kurt, so let me understand how this works. You email the farm and request a visit? And they will take the time to host you even if only two people and even if you aren't in the market to board a broodmare or buy a stallion season? I drive up North all the time (to San Luis Obispo) and would be in 7th heaven to have a farm tour.
  • How bright red is Coil! Beautiful....
  • poor Turkoman :(
  • Hi kurt. I'm in the 951, Cherry Valley actually. You're in the San Berdoo area? Or is it closer to Bakersfield?
  • VA-yah,im in san bernardino, technically highland, close to the casino..i remember you saying your in cherry valley now that you mention it,so,yah, were less about 20 minutes apart.
ESPECIALLY- yah, you got it exactly right. i just emailed them and told them i was writing to inquire about a visit. that i was thinking i would like to come on monday or wednesday and if the visit was ok, i would come at whatever time was convenient for them.( in this case, it was 130pm as they had just started breeding that day) which worked out great since it was nearly a 3 hour ride. i told them up front i was visiting as a fan and they were totally good with it. the man that showed me around said they encourage visitors so i would be stunned if they didnt welcome you openly. the email was replied to by a woman named GAYLE...hope that helps..enjoy your visit if ya go

Thanks Kurt for sharing your pictures and giving me an opportunity to see close up these beautiful horses I otherwise never would. I'm glad I got a close up of Coil. What a handsome guy. Good to see Richard's Kid is being well taken care of, I always liked him.
  • Kurt, I have been a small interest owner in Richard's Kid. I am glad you visited with him, but do not appreciate your comments about his former trainer. If Tom said anything to you about any info on that subject, it should not be in social media. He was a little thin on arrival because of his injury and food had to be backed off since he was on stall rest. His injury has been mentioned in our original retirement announcement. So please be careful what you say here in any social media, because it is no one's business. So just enjoy him and let that satisfy you. Thank you. He is a great horse and we are hoping for great babies.

MAUREEN- apologys for any offense, however, i didnt mention ANYONE by name..none of his former trainers..nor did i mention who showed me the horses at magali..in all honesty, i DONT remember the persons name and im NOT sure if that person is the stallion manager or not.
went and looked at what i said..just incase i mispoke..im not sure why your so upset over someone saying a horse was "too thin" and "didnt like the trainer"..thats all that was said. thats NOT the same as saying a horse was abused or mistreated..NO ONE said anything of the sort, nor did i imply it. as for an opinion of a trainer....theres not a trainer alive that SOMEONE doesnt dislike...thats why theres hundreds to choose from. this is zenyattas board and ive seen several people criticle of HER trainer ..John Shirreffs..so again, i am sorry for offending you, but i think you might be over reacting just a little bit.
final note- the response to the pics has been 100% positive, no ones said a bad thing about RK's appearance or my comments..probably no one even noticed.

  • How cool!!! Thanks for sharing all your photos and comments about your visit to Magali Farms. The horses are beautiful and I love the foal photos also. Good to know the tips about emailing for a visit. There are a couple of TB breeding farms around here in TX and I need to find out more about them and see if I can arrange a visit sometime. The weather is finally getting warmer - woohoo!!

Nothing offensive with what u said kurt. U were just quoting what the handler said

  • Regarding Richard’s Kid: I love his pedigree and I am thrilled a horse of his racing caliber is standing in California.
  • I remember him from one of Zenyatta's Breeders Cup Classics. Don't have time to watch them right now, but think it was the 2009. ?? Whichever it was, she beat him. lol
  • Kurt, you are absolutely correct about one thing, I never, ever would have noticed what Maureen was complaining about if I had not seen her post. You did not offend nor have you ever. People who don't like certain trainers are all over the internet including on this site. That's the way social media is. Regardless, you were quoting someone else and that's fine. I love your posts and photos, please keep them coming.
