Well the era of good will from the racing industry towards it's fans and bettors has just ended. Less than a month after the PETA video came out, we heard shouts of reform. We heard change was on the horizon. Well, I guess it has happened:

Keeneland will go from having the safest track in America to "State-of-the-art dirt."

Churchill Clowns will raise the takeout of Win, Place and show bets from 16% to 17.5% and on exoctic bets from 19% to 22%.

MAY THE BOYCOTTS BEGIN!

Hey, CDI,

I will NEVER place another wager on your tracks, yes, even the KENTUCKY DERBY PRESENTED BY YUM! BRANDS

I will NEVER place another wager on any one of your tracks that you own including: Churchill Clowns, Arlington, Calder Casino and Race Course and Fair Ground Slots and Race Track.

Also I will never again use Twin Spires dot com to place a wager. I'll use Xpressbet. But I'll still use Twin Spires just to view the free video and replays.

  • Folks, this is the beginning of the end for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands as we know it. It will continue, but it will lose it's stature. Already there's a buzz going on about abandoning the Derby, perhaps make the Santa Anita Derby or the Arkansas Derby the first leg of the Triple Crown.

    Let's do this.
  • To California Chrome's owners and trainer, I ask you to do something positive for the industry . . . Skip the Derby! You already won the Santa Anita Derby. I propose that race to be the new first leg of the Triple Crown!
  • I love these two tweets about Churchill Downs after the news came out
    Donald Harris @ClockerDH
So to rehash industry news of late. Buzzer talk btwn 2 Hall of Famers, brutal video, #RealStoryPeta response....and higher takeout. Absurd.
    Jerod Dinken @J_Dinks
Hey @ChurchillDowns! You are really good with math so here's one for you:
    What is 22% of 0?
  • It's absolutely incredible.
  • Wow if Churchill ruins it and the Derby actually does lose its luster then Horse Racing as we know it will be seriously on the decline. It will take a nose dive

Well, it could turn out to be a good thing after all. Horse racing can once and for all rid itself of Churchill Downs Incorporated.

    Churchill Clowns greatest HITS:

CHURCHILL CLOWNS SELLS HOLLYWOOD PARK TO A REAL ESTATE COMPANY SEALING IT'S DOOM AND COSTING THE INDUSTRY A VITAL TRACK PLUS LOSING FANS THAT LIVE IN LOS ANGELES

CHURCHILL CLOWNS BUY CALDER AND BULIDS A SHINY CASINO. MEANWHILE THEY LET THE BACKSTRETCH WHERE THE HORSES AND SOME GROOMS LIVE DETERIORATE INTO SQUALID CONDITIONS

CHURCHILL CLOWNS BUY THE FAIR GROUNDS IN NEW ORLEANS AND SEE IT'S TURF COURSE FALL INTO DISREPAIR, MAINLY FOR A JAZZ FESTIVAL THAT'S HELD WHEN THE TRACK IS CLOSED. FURTHERMORE THEY REFUSE TO FIX A VIDEO SCREEN. THIS FORCES LOUISIANA POLITICIANS TO STEP IN

CHURCHILL BUYS ARLINGTON PARK NEAR CHICAGO, A GEM IN THE MIDWEST AND INVESTS NOTHING INTO IT. ARLINGTON COULD CLOSE DOWN ANY DAY NOW

AT A TIME WHEN THE INDUSTRY NEEDS SOME LEADERSHIP AND DIRECTION, CHURCHILL CLOWNS DECIDES TO RAISE THE TAKEOUT ON BETTORS, SOME OF WHOM ARE CLOSE TO JUST GIVING UP ON BETTING ON HORSE RACING

CHURCHILL CLOWNS CONTINUES TO RACE YEAR ROUND AT CALDER FIGHTING GULFSTREAM IN A WAR NOBODY CAN WIN

It's clear what Churchill Clowns' intentions are:

They want horse racing to fail.

  • Heres a surprise bonus hit

The yr they held the Breeders Cup they decided to water the turf track before a juvenile turf race thus resulting in one horse to slip around the turn throwing Rosie Napravnik. The horse ended up with a broken shoulder and was euthanized
  • It isn't hard to read the breadcrumbs . . .

Churchill wants no part of horse racing any more.

Good Lord. I don't even know what to say here. Sorry, I was responding to Rachel's post about watering the turf.

Racetracks sit on huge swaths of land. They make only marginal profits if they are used for horse racing. That's why Bay Meadows and Hollywood Park no longer exist. BM and HP were situated in the number two and three metropolitan areas in the United States.

Arlington is in suburban Chicago, Calder is in Miami and Fair Grounds is in New Orleans.

    Chicago
    Miami
    New Orleans

If they could get rid of horse racing and keep the casinos, then redevelop the land, they will make a killing.

Follow the breadcrumbs . . . they know this move of theirs is another nail in the coffin.

  • Case in point, while their in the process of tearing down Hollywood Park, guess what, they will keep their casino.
  • I once saw an episode of Undercover Boss where the CEO of Churchill said he would "improve horse racing" which obviously hasn't happened so it's either 2 things: 1. He lied. 2. He quit/got fired.
  • Well Queen, you may or may not bet on the races, but the ones who do are LIVID. Read this article in Bloodhorse, but more importantly, read the comments below the article:

    http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/84325/churchill-downs-to-increase-takeout-rates

Many say they will NOT bet on a Churchill track ever again.

It's going to be a bloodbath.

WHILE THE RACING WORLD REACTS TO CHURCHILL'S DECISION, CDI EXECUTIVES ARE PROBABLY SITTING IN THE BOARD ROOM HIGH-FIVING

When the New Orleans Times-Picayune did a scathing 5-part series on the malaise going on at the Fair Grounds Slots and Race Track, something just didn't seem right. The part that really perked my interest was the fact that Churchill officials actually answered the complaints against them. Usually in these situations, they decline comment. But they were there willfully giving their side of the story.

And their answers were incredibly self-serving. For example: "Why should we invest in fixing the infield video board when only 5% of our bettors actually look at that thing?"

Another: "We've already spent $2 million trying to fix the turf course . . . " as if too bad, we're not spending any more.

Do you get the feeling that they were purposely trying to sound unconcerned?

When California last raised the takeout, there was a severe backlash towards them. Churchill has to know they will also be the brunt of a backlash, more meaningful, a boycott.

In order to increase the takeout, their on-track handle had to go lower than $1.2 million a day. In other words, they would make more if their handle was $1.199 mil than they would be at $1.2. So they were actually rooting for the damn thing to go down.

And increasing the takeout GUARANTEES the handle will stay below that threshold. But along with the decreasing business, means less employees needed. Lay off a few here and a few there . . .

Do you see how they get record profits year after year?

    They're high-fiving, fist bumping, face licking, you name it . . .

Here's Churchill's gameplan: They want betting and purses to continue to go down in Louisville. Instant racing is already legal in Kentucky. In fact the track in North America with the highest purses is Kentucky Downs a very small turf track that only races five days a year and is located just north of the Tennessee border.

But Instant racing is beneath Churchill's dignity (sorry I used Churchill and dignity in the same sentence). Churchill wants a full-blown, Las Vegas style casino. If racing continues to decline, Kentucky officials will have no choice but to give in to Churchill's demands. Instant Racing is doing the prep work for CDI, it will show alternative gaming is good for business and good for the state.

Meanwhile the horse industry and the horse players get the shaft.

Churchill isn't dumb, they know the backlash is coming. And it's playing right into their hands.
  • Stupid casinos. Why couldnt they leave casinos and horse racing seperate
  • There's only one way the industry and fans can put an end the problem: ELIMINATE THE KENTUCKY DERBY PRESENTED BY YUM! BRANDS.

Without a doubt, Derby and Oaks days are by far and above CDI's holy grail. Over 250,000 fans pack the facility on those two days. The average fan probably spends over $500 there just on admission, seats, souvenirs and concessions. That estimate may be low.

If horsemen align themselves with the fans, and switch the first leg of the TC to Santa Anita and Arkansas Derbies, which could offer a purse of $5 million (Churchill only offers $2 million even though they should be offering $6 million based on the handle), once and for all we can rid ourselves of this mess.

And it's a mess that keeps getting bigger.
  • I'm Saying Santa Anita and Arkansas Derbies on an alternating basis because those two tracks can handle crowds of 100,000.

    Let's do it.
  • And one more idea that will blow Churchill Clowns out of the water, and it would take some participation from Louisiana Downs:

Rename the SA/Ark Derby the SUPER DERBY!
  • SANTA ANITA AIN'T WASTING TIME, THEY RESTORE THE ROLLING DOUBLES AT 18%

There's a war going on in South Florida. In this corner we have Calder Casino and Race Course owned by Churchill Clowns Inc, in the other corner we have Gulfstream Park owned by Frank Stronach.

Gentlemen, this is South Florida, so hitting below the belt is allowed!

Wait a minute, less than 24 hours after Churchill announces a takeout increase, Santa Anita, owned by Stronach, announces it's restoring rolling doubles at 18% takeout. Churchill's went from 19% to 22%.

    http://www.drf.com/news/santa-anita-restore-rolling-doubles

This is Southen California, so hitting below the belt is allowed!
