was amazing on the track, given his small size, standing at only 15.1 hands.
His stallion career proved to be even more amazing --- he sired his own dynasty, The Northern Dancer line.
impact on breeding can be seen worldwide, so many of the great ones on the track and in the breeding sheds are a part of the Dancer's legacy.
I've attached links to a number of articles, I doubt anyone will read them all, but, the first one is very interesting as it discusses the dynamics of how he ran and bested so many other horses much larger in size.

I just saw this thread, and of course I have to say Ruffian is by far the greatest filly, not to mention SHE was the ONLY horse to have had that famous statement said about her by Secretariat's very own trainer. She could run a mile and a half in sprinter's speed, then come back to the winners circle looking like a showhorse. The horses of today have changes so very much in their looks, flat as a board faces, or slightly roman nosed now. TB's used to also be extremely good looking, gorgeous animals. I have to say of the 'current' horses that still has the looks, Exaggerator still has them, and I'm hoping he will pass them on.
Additionally, there is in racing what they call The Big Three: They are Man O'War, Secretariat, and RUFFIAN. That, alone, speaks for itself. Ruffian had what every speed horse, distance horse and show horse had. Sadly, what she also had was the brittle bones of her heritage. Just imagine what could have happened had that not happened? She was already putting that colt away, pulling away from him.. she came from an incredible line of broodmares, both her mother and sister were great mares. I would have loved to see Ruffian X Swale. NOW, that would have been a dark flying horse! Just look at the small photo of her on my posts; you will not see a TB look like that anymore.. she was one of a kind, too great for this earth it seems.
