  • Diamond M Stable's War Dancer, the winner of the Louisville Handicap, does his best running on turf, and has not finished worse than second since stretching out to longer distances for his last two starts. Prior to the Louisville victory, the Ken McPeek-trained son of War Front was second in the Grade II Elkhorn Stakes, also at a mile and a half, at Keeneland. He won last year's Grade II Virginia Derby at the mile and a quarter distance of the Arlington Handicap. The four-time winner on turf will carry 119 pounds including jockey Alan Garcia.

  • DEPARTING
(Last week- No. 9) Like Lea below, this 4-year-old gelding is owned by Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneider – but runs out of the Al Stall Jr. barn. He had dead aim on the red-hot Moonshine Mullin in the stretch of the Stephen Foster after a four-wide run and couldn’t get past him, but he might not have been at 100% in his second start after a long layoff. How Departing fares in the Whitney against Palace Malice and Will Take Charge will give us a better line as to where he fits on this list. The Stephen Foster was a solid race, but also relatively slow-paced, and Moonshine Mullin and Departing both were forwardly paced and benefitted from the softer fractions.
  • Souper Colossal is running July 19th in the Sanford Stakes. He will be ridden by Paco Lopez. He is trained by Edward Plesa Jr. and owned by Live Oak Plantation.
  • Summer Front is running July 20th in the Eddie Read Stakes. He will be ridden by Joe Bravo. He is trained by Christophe Clement and owned by Waterford Stable.
  • LADY OF VICTORY (War Front - Seeking Simplicity, by Seeking the Gold) $410K KEESEP13; No blacktype in her immediate family. Second dam is a G-3 winner, and she hails from the family of Jockey Club Gold Cup hero ALBERT THE GREAT. Filly has very solid, consistent works, including a sharp 3F lung opener pre-race work. Mott is only 8% FTS, but when they work like this, watch out.
