Pulpit

Even though he is gone, Pulpit just keeps showing up.

What a year 2014 has been for Pulpit. We may not have gotten a Triple Crown winner on the track, but we got a Triple Crown in the breeding shed when Pulpit's grandsons (California Chrome and Tonalist) took down all three of the Classics.

And today he is the sire of the $1.25M Belmont Derby Invitational (gr.IT) winner.

Mr Speaker Delivers Belmont Derby Shocker
Mr Speaker, ignored at odds of 23-1, charged along the inside to overtake favored Adelaide by a head for a major upset in the $1.25 million Belmont Derby Invitational (gr. IT) on the inner turf course July 5 at Belmont Park (VIDEO).

Jose Lezcano piloted the 3-year-old son of Pulpit to victory for owner/breeder Phipps Stable and Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey. Mr Speaker paid $49 to win.

Adelaide was second with Flamboyant third. The final time was 2:01.18 over a course rated good.

  • Pulpit was the first stallion I met in 2010 on my farm tour in Kentucky. I was just amazed when his groom brought him out to meet the 10 people waiting for him. Cool as a cucumber, looked at everyone, allowed hugs, pats, took peppermints from us and tolerated multiple pictures without turning a hair. He seemed very, very comfortable, notably when his groom said. "hey, big guy, you don't have to show them your money maker." We all had a hardy laugh over that. I was devastated when I heard he had died in his paddock. What a great horse...
