"go the distance" generically in horse racing refers to a horse bred and raced at shorter distances, and then run at a distance he / she hadn't run before, and succeeds. The distance might be greater than a mile.
I've always thought of it as a race at or over 1 1⁄4-mile. "Can he/she go the distance?" We start hearing that a lot when a horse is prepping for the Kentucky Derby and/or the Belmont.
