Smith to Ride Hansen in West Virginia Derby
by Claire Novak The Blood Horse
    Last Updated: 7/25/2012 4:27:59 PM
Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith will be aboard 2011 2-year-old champion Hansen when the colt makes a start in the $750,000 West Virginia Derby (gr. II) Aug. 4 at Mountaineer Casino Racetrack & Resort, owner Dr. Kendall Hansen and Smith confirmed July 25.
Smith replaces regular rider Ramon Dominguez, who has chosen to honor previous commitments on the day.
"He's a famous rider and it'll be nice to team up with him for the race," Dr. Hansen said of Smith. "Ramon has a couple great mounts he doesn't want to pass up and I certainly understand that. How many times do you get a Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) winner and a Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner picking up the mount on your horse?"
Smith has enjoyed a recent volley of stakes scores aboard top contenders such as Delaware Handicap (gr. II) victress Royal Delta and Suburban Handicap (gr. II) winner Mucho Macho Man, and spent the earlier part of the season piloting Bodemeister to victory in the Arkansas Derby (gr. I) and runner-up finishes in the Kentucky Derby presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) and Preakness Stakes (gr. I) before riding Paynter to a second-place finish in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I).
"I'm extremely excited, I really am," Smith remarked. "I feel so blessed, I feel guilty, almost, getting the opportunity to ride so many great horses right now. Between Royal Delta last weekend and Mucho Macho Man earlier, then getting to pick up a horse like this, it's just incredible."
Trained by Mike Maker, Hansen romped wire-to-wire by 10 lengths in the Iowa Derby (gr. III) last out July 30, his first start since running ninth in the Kentucky Derby. Earlier in the year the frontrunning speedster was second in the Holy Bull Stakes (gr. III), won the Gotham Stakes (gr. III), and finished second by 1 1/4 lengths to Dullahan in the Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I).
"He's extremely talented, a fast horse with a high cruising speed," said Smith. "He keeps it and keeps running with it. I've been very fortunate with horses like that and hopefully this will be the same. Even on the Triple Crown trail this year, the horses I got to ride were similar. I've always been a big fan of him and horses like him are dangerous—they run very quick, very fast fractions and continue to run."
According to Dr. Hansen, the homebred son of Tapit is on the right track for a successful second part of the season and a start in the Aug. 25 Travers Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga Race Course.
"He's gonna keep impressing," he said.

Love and Pride won the Personal Ensign. Royal Delta was second
Love and Pride is by A. P. Indy, out of Ile de France, who is a. G1-placed Strom Cat half sister to Bernardini.
TVG analysts were saying that Royal Delta was hot & sweaty before race.
It was in the 90′s with high humidity.
    Here’s a confirming tweet

Wow, tough to come up with Love and Pride there. Royal Delta ran huge considering how she looked
  • Yikes! It's Tricky nearly washed out at the start. She ran gallantly and I hope comes out of the race in good shape. Nice run by Love and Pride. I love watching the development of the AP Indy legacy. I think Pulpit was his first (if not one of the first) of his get to be successful and has become quite a prolific stud in his own right (I love Tapit).

Royal Delta looked pretty flat to me, not as responsive as normal. I thought Mike did a great job getting her to place. She just didn't fire when he asked her... I hope It's Tricky is okay- that was one nasty "stumble"

Mucho Macho Man, Ritvo in hunt for Woodward win
Posted: Tuesday, August 28, 2012 5:50 PM by Nicole Russo

For the past several years, the Woodward Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course has belonged to the ladies.

In 2009, the three-year-old filly Rachel Alexandra defeated older males in the historic event to complete an undefeated season. Last year, Havre de Grace became the second female ever to take the race. Both fillies went on to earn Horse of the Year honors.

Trainer Kathy Ritvo could make her own history as the first female trainer to win the Woodward when she saddles Suburban Handicap (G2) winner Mucho Macho Man against what is expected to be a short field for this year's renewal, on Saturday at Saratoga. A victory would be the first career Grade 1 score for Mucho Macho Man, by far the most accomplished runner Ritvo has handled.

  • Don Robinson Talks About Zenyatta as a Young Horse at Winter Quarter Farm.
    at THE SATURDAY POST. November 15th, 2010 § 39
Fairy tales often begin when a seemingly ordinary life takes a magical twist and ventures toward a fabled outcome.

Keta Note: The article is a Q & A session. Here is an excerpt
JW: How would you describe Zenyatta’s personality as a young girl?
DR: As a young girl, Zenyatta was very personable.
Zenyatta was full of spirit, but she was reasonable. She had a sister before her, a really good filly, named Balance. Balance was very flighty. She was a great race horse, not as good as Zenyatta of course, but Balance was hard to handle. You always had to be thinking ahead of her.
Zenyatta had that sort of energy, but was much more reasonable. You could sort of talk to her and she understood you. Thoroughbreds can be very spirited and fiery, but the good ones tend to have a good mind.

Keta Note: An important part of Zenyatta & who she is was the team!

A huge thank you to Ann Maree for sharing this! Here is part of her comments on it.I'm going to piggy back on Keta's retrospective from the TVG printing of the article, which quotes Don Robinson. Jennifer Wirth-Ice's old blog (she no longer updates it, but it's still up to look up old articles) had a wonderful interview she did with Robinson just before the BCC10. I love reading this because of his early history with Zenny and her entire family
