Sport Horses: Eventing, Show Jumping, etc.

This discussion was created for horses of interest that performed in other sporting events outside of horseracing. Driving, endurance and Western show events can also be included in this topic. There is another thread for dressage entitled: "Horses in Dressage" in the General Topics Category but dressage can also be included in this thread as well.

  • Thank you Paniolo_Gal!

This is the jump off between Abudllah and Touch of Class for Individual Gold in 1984 LA Olympics. This is where she won her Second Gold medal in those Olympics. She and Joe also were on the Gold Medal winning USA Showjumping Team.

Wow! Unbelievable finish by Touch of Class...all clear in the jump off! Imagine...she was unsuccessful in flat racing and was considered for steeplechasing but thank goodness she found her "niche" in showjumping instead!

I'd like to honor her in the Old Friends thread. She lived to a good age of 28. Does anyone know if she died due to infirmities of old age rather than some other fatal incident?
  • I believe it was just old age but here might be a starting place for you.

Be interesting to see if you can find any of her decedents?

Thanks Zenyen! Looks like I can definitely put Touch of Class in the Old Friends thread...I'll work on this.

I'll also see if any of her TB progeny raced with enough earnings for Golden Girls. There's race/career earning requirements, etc set by RR12 & Rachel...unless I can do a lineage review of Touch of Class in Golden Girls...like I recently did for Cigar. That might work if there is enough stats...if not I'll list some or her progeny within the post in Old Friends.. :oD
  • I would be very surprised is any of her progeny went to the track. I believe she was bred for sport horses only.

OK...found in Allbreed Pedigree that she had 2 fillies under: reports->progeny. One by a Belgium warmblood and the other by a Selle Francais...I'll include her progeny in Old Friends instead. Thanks again for your knowledgeable advise Zenyen!

  • What a cool topic thread! Thanks for starting. I loved the video of Abdullah and Touch of Class, both of whom I have to admit to first learning about as Breyer model horses - lol! Wonderful to see them in action for real!
  • Nothing wrong with finding them that way Celeste! I'm going to lie, I learned about Zenyatta and Black Caviar looking around on Breyer's website. :)
  • Thank you so much for including that! I was there in that crowd! Actually wrote to Joe and have signed photo by him riding touch of class. They were magnificent! K
  • This video is fascinating! I wish they'd do it for all horse disciplines.

Just read that Icabad Crane who ran in the Preakness in 2008 is now an event horse. He just took first in a preliminary event!

"Photos of Icabad from MCTA Horse Trials yesterday, where he won his Preliminary division on a score of 27.7!" - https://www.facebook.com/IcabadCraneFanClub

I remember watching him run in several east coast races! Great to see one making it after racing.

Last year he won the title of World's Most Wanted Thoroughbred when he won the 2014 Thoroughbred Makeover that was then held at Pimlico. He has been doing so well in his new career and it is so wonderful to see his success and the attendant publicity for the Retired Racehorse Project.

The story of Ichabod Crane is really about the good trainer Graham Motion and his wife Anita having the wonderful eventer Phillip Dutton train Crane, bring him along, and show him. Great 4 way partnership. Very good horsemen involved on all sides with Crane. You can see some of his training videos to be an eventer on YouTube.
  • I agree @KMM - Graham Motion and his wife seem to keep pretty good tabs on their former racers and find them new jobs and homes if they can..

Just found this thread. Thanks for posting that great jump off, Zenyen.

I read her pedigree first and saw Blue Larkspur among her ancestors. She is one I've been following for large ears in her descendants. I then watched the video and along with watching the jumping looked to see if she had big ears and she did. A new filly pictured among the new foals yesterday has very big ears, but no immediate antecedants with big ears. But that filly has got Blue Larkspur in her pedigree. Here she (the filly) is: https://scontent-atl.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/11179955_10202598913972561_5020662341494772995_n.jpg?oh=90868b6b77c9916c7e57ebbcbf80d6d9&oe=55CE609C Her sire is Lonhro, who has small ears, and her dam is Queen of the Green, also small ears. But check hers out!
  • That is adorable! Part of it is probably camera angle, but those are still some huge ears. I'd be checking to see if there were any loose donkeys running around the neighborhood. :-)

Chester Weber's horses are headed across the Atlantic for Royal Windsor Horse Show next week.
  • Interesting. I didn't know he had a facebook page set up - I will try to follow that. I enjoy watching the driving - talk about some fierce competition and some athletic horses - wow! Thanks!

I thought the forum might find this interesting, since there was a discussion over the tragic loss of Dambala due to an injury sustained at 2015 Rolex.

This is a helmet cam of rider Elisa Wallace and her horse Simply Priceless "John". It's a clean round but will give you a sense of the fences and conditions these competitors face at this level of competition as well as how fit they have to be!

    This was their dressage round

That was awesome Zenyen! Definitely see that the challenges keep coming. Some of the most physically and mentally challenging coming with a tired horse.
  • Thanks, Zenyen! Interesting videos and they are definitely athletes to be admired.
  • Chester Weber won big at Royal Windsor. The latest pictures show he even got to meet the Queen of England
