Just thought we should start this thread now that breeding season for 2017 is essentially over. Any new stallions should be breeding for the first time next February.
Mastery was very obviously talented, but I do always have some concerns when horses suffer broken bones while racing (along with having a very short career) and then go to the breeding shed. Hopefully it was just a freak accident and not something that could be passed down to any foals...

I used to worry about this more, but I know enough people (myself included) who have suffered a freak bone break called a Jones fracture from stepping wrong that unless there's a strong family history or a horse has had more than one such incident, I'm inclined to credit bad luck rather than genes. I think condylar fractures might be the horse equivalent of the Jones fracture.
Non sequitur, but Mastery walking in bell boots reminds me of my dog walking in winter booties. Which is to say, I don't think he likes them much.
True, I was weary of Shanghai Bobby for this reason, but family history of fraility is not in his blood. Unlike horses such as Ruffian, whose sire was rather renown for bone problems.
Now they're clarifying that Mastery isn't officially retired yet, so he may not stand stud at Claiborne in 2018. It seems like the most likely scenario to me, but they have yet to make an official decision on it.

Claiborne is usually very reasonable. I would say under $25k. Orb started (and still stands) for $25k. Of Candy Ride's "important" sons at stud, Twirling Candy has been very successful and stands at $20k, and Sindey's Candy is hanging out in Argentina. Clubhouse Ride and Misremebered stand in CA for $2500 each.
I would wager between $10 - $15 as a start. I don't think they'll go under $10K but given that a proven Candy Ride son is at $20 they won't go that high either. At least not till the first foals on are the ground.
I'm really keen on this guy. I liked what I saw on the track and I think he would have been a real threat in any of the Triple Crown races this year. At $10K - $15K I wish I had the financial means. Oh well.
This is posted here on the assumption that Gormley will not race after 2017 Keta Spendthrift Farm @spendthriftfarm Jun 10 2017 We will be cheering hard for Gormley, who will be retiring to Spendthrift on the completion of his racing career to join dad MALIBU MOON!

Well I think that decision was made quicker than we had anticipated haha. Not at all surprising.
I would guess they set his stud fee somewhere between $15-20k.
