  • Letters From Rockland Farm (Country Life), by Josh Pons.

Here's an excerpt from the Bloodhorse, that touches on the Country Life Foal-Cam.

Look into the foaling barn. Mares rest for the coming ordeal in deep yellow straw, exhaling loudly, their breathing burdened by enormous bellies. I peer through the glass of the night-watch room to eight views on the Foal-Cam monitor. Hollywood Squares - for mares. Images accessible on cell phones, laptops, TV screens. Fans of the foaling barn, owners of mares - intermittent insomniacs all - watch the internet feed from wherever.
  • Here are the mares (and stallion) cam links so people don't have to dig through old posts to find them.

  • Watch the Vaulcluse foaling ---- seemed to be relatively easy for her and she had a nice War Front Filly ---
But Vaulcluse had tested NI positive and the little filly can't nurse from her yet. Watched for awhile and she sure is confused and wants to nurse === doesn't like that muzzle!

    Quote from the Blog update:
Tonight and possibly tomorrow the staff will milk-out Vaulcluse to clear out her colostrum. Once the colostrum is stripped out, the foal will be able to nurse as normal. She may wear a muzzle in the interim but hopefully just for a day or so. Thanks to the farm staff, the birth video is below. Welcome Vaulcluse'20!
  • Right hind?
  • Yip @whoodler, she is favouring it, my personal guess is a contracted fetlock, am guessing they will treat it in appropriate way e.g oxy, correctiive shoing, splint as needs be. Probably waiting for vet check to formulate plan

Pretty filly, definitely will be happier when the muzzle is off, she is doing plenty of houdini moves to remove it

Vaulcluse and filly have clear bill of health

Vaulcluse and filly are having a great first morning together. They were both checked out by a veternarian and given the all clear. The filly received plasma via IV which will help to protect her immunity in the early days. The vet then took a sample of blood to make sure she is healthy inside as well as out. Like human babies, the foals cannot communicate if anything doesn’t feel right, so we have to look at their blood work to stay on top of things. If something is wrong, they can go down hill in a hurry, so we always take every precaution to stay one step ahead.

After a physical examination, the foal was found to have a slightly contracted hind ankle, so she will be getting a bandage on it later this morning.
  • The fetlock didnt really hamper her during the vet check, took two strong guys to hold her, the little madam wasnt having any of it and put up quite a fight. She is a feisty one

Vaulcluse20 is jumping for joy at no more muzzle LOL
However she is being closely watched after having mild colic last night and being given Banamine for her discomfort. It is believed she coliced from too much milk and is expected to be just fine.

  • I have a question for those on the Forum who have experience or knowledge regarding foaling at farms that house mares. I am not being critical of how the procedure is handled but I have noticed on Foal Patrol this season that at least three (3) of the foals have had leg issues, mostly with contracted tendons.

Magical World 20 - contracted tendon, right hind, corrective shoe (this one was a difficult delivery, her Gun Runner foal was a whopper at 150 lbs)
Ashado 20 - contracted left hind fedlock, splint
Vaulcluse 20 - contracted tendon, right hind leg, corrective leg brace

All of the farms assist the mare with foaling --- pulling the foal by their legs, does this cause any of these issues?

  • edited April 5
Foals I have seen include the Foalings watched at Country Life Farm, and they are a assist only when needed Farm but they have had many foals needing some really strong assistance. Many have been huge in height, and very long legged. However only one foal at CLF has had need of Vet care assistance(beyond the normal Vet check up) thus far. I am wondering if because of the short winter months and temps and the grass never dying out of the Foals in utero simply had more chance to grow and this is leaving them with less room in the womb which causes the legs to cramp until born where they can move those legs better. I don't feel the pulling of the foal is the problem as the assistants are merely pulling when the mare is pushing so there would be no pulling of the legs then is normal.
  • Very sad to read that New Money Honeys little girl was euthanized today due to complications from her colic surgeries.

    No!
  • :'( I so hope New Money Honey has a complete recovery
  • Seems little Filly had several bouts of Colic from the start. I hate to learn a beautiful young foal has passed but by the report on Foal patrol they tried all they could and she was suffering. RIP lovely NMH20 your short time with us was a pleasure to behold. My condolences to Indian Creek Farm on a great loss.
  • Update on Emotional Kitten:

    Emotional Kitten's halter
    Emotional Kitten
    April 2nd, 2020

Earlier this week, we received a question about Emotional Kitten and the red tape on her halter. The farm staff informed us on how that is used:

"That is a marker that means Emotional Kitten is on Regumate. The red tape is a way for our staff to easily identify which mares need or do not need Regumate. We put them on it for a number of reasons. One being for Progesterone levels. We test each mare’s Progesterone level (Progesterone is the hormone that helps maintain pregnancy) and if their number is a little low, we will put them on Regumate just to help keep those levels up."

Emotional Kitten is getting closer to foaling. Follow her at Denali Stud and we will continue to share new updates.
