Some interesting info about Candy Ride:

https://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/215756/the-candy-man-can

At stud the biomechanical traits that made Candy Ride such a terrific racehorse also have helped him achieve stardom as a stallion.
Candy Ride has an unusual set of what we call “rear triangles”—bone lengths of his ilium, femur, and tibia. The ideal arrangement is for each to be the same size to bring balance to the power thrust through a horse’s quarters. If the ilium is longer than the other two, a horse may generate great speed but possibly at the expense of stamina. Candy Ride is notable because he does have quite a long ilium, what horsemen sometimes call a long hip, and the horse was able to generate high speed and was able to maintain his pace over a considerable distance of ground.
Candy Ride has been able to pass on some of this unusual alignment. While evidence suggests the majority of foals by any sire will have rear triangles close to the same size, from the foals by Candy Ride in our database, only slightly more than 50% have an equal-sized ilium, femur, and tibia. The remainder have unequal lengths, and Candy Ride’s record as a sire indicates breeders using him have a very good chance of getting foals with great power, as well as the ability to carry it.

It was confirmed in the blog 2 weeks ago, so this is not "new" news.. The paulick report got their information from the blog, and quote it.

Yes, but since it doesn’t have a thread yet, I figured maybe there were people who didn’t know. Also not everyone checks the blog, some people rely on the forum
  • It was reported and discussed on the forum as well.

I'm a superstitious old horsewoman but I wish we'd waited till the filly was on the ground, stand and nursing before making a thread like this.
  • Me too! Should be about Zenyatta and her health. In this forum, we have had enough sad tales. It is kind of like a friend or sister who has had miscarriage (s). Everyone knows of the pregnancy but are respectful of privacy and respecting boundaries. I think it should be low key. I think decisions to breed Z are very personal to Anne and Jerry.
  • A thread like this has been done for every foal since Coz. I just noticed that one hadn’t been started for this newest foal
  • Yes, kind of a tradition by now. We've had happy endings and sad endings. That's life.

Thanks for finding that old article on Candy Ride.

  • Was looking at the Lane's End Stallion Roster and got me wondering if going forward Zenyatta won't leave the farm, but only be bred to LE stallions.

Interesting thought @Especially_Horses . Because I'm interested to see how she'll nick with all of their stallions (and because I'm bored) I decided to nick her with all of them.

Accelerate x Zenyatta: A+ with the only inbreeding being in the 4th generation (Mr. Prospector.)
Candy Ride x Zenyatta (mating for 2020): A+ with inbreeding to Mr. Prospector.
Catalina Cruiser x Zenyatta: C+ with inbreeding to both Mr. Prospector and Native Dancer.
City of Light x Zenyatta: D with inbreeding to Mr. Prospector.
Connect x Zenyatta: C with inbreeding to Mr. Prospector.
Honor Code x Zenyatta (I personally would LOVE to see this mating!): D with inbreeding to Mr. Prospector and Secretariat.
Lemon Drop Kid x Zenyatta: D with inbreeding to Mr. Prospector.
Liam's Map x Zenyatta: A+ with inbreeding to Mr. Prospector.
Mineshaft x Zenyatta: D with inbreeding to Mr. Prospector and Hoist the Flag.
Mr Speaker x Zenyatta: D with inbreeding to Mr. Prospector and Hoist the Flag.
Noble Mission x Zenyatta (I personally would LOVE to see this mating!): A with inbreeding to Mr. Prospector and Northern Dancer.
Quality Road x Zenyatta: D with inbreeding to Mr. Prospector.
The Factor x Zenyatta: A+ with inbreeding to Mr. Prospector, Nearctic, and Forli.
Tonalist x Zenyatta: C with inbreeding to Mr. Prospector.
Twirling Candy x Zenyatta: B with inbreeding to Mr. Prospector.
Unified x Zenyatta: B with inbreeding to Mr. Prospector.
Union Rags x Zenyatta: C+ with inbreeding to Mr. Prospector and Northern Dancer.
West Coast x Zenyatta: A++ with inbreeding to Mr. Prospector.
  • Wow. Thanks for that input.
  • How did she nick with Coz and Zi's sires? And Zellda's?

    @whoodler

Bernardini x Zenyatta (Cozmic One): D with inbreeding to Mr. Prospector.
Tapit x Zenyatta (Ziconic): B with inbreeding to Mr. Prospector.
War Front x Zenyatta (Z14/"Z Princess", Z16, both deceased): A+ with inbreeding to Mr. Prospector and Forli.
Medaglia d'Oro x Zenyatta (Zellda): B+ with no inbreeding in 5 generations.
Into Mischief x Zenyatta (2019 aborted foal): A++ with inbreeding to Halo and Hail to Reason.
Her nick with Candy Ride (Z20) has already been posted above.

  • Thanks.

Interesting IF her Foals by Warfront had been :'( May they both RIP
That was a nick of A+ with inbreeding to Mr Prospector and Forli. I wonder why they have not thought on "The Factor" being that is quite similar having Nearctic added to the inbreeding. Who being a HOF stallion seems would be a bonus. Unless there is untold issues not told online about Nearctic.
  • I love The Factor, but he's not really thought of as a top tier stallion. His AEI is also only a 1.15 compared to his CI of 1.40.
  • The Factor is not a top tier stallion and as such I wouldn't think it is worth a roll of the dice to double back on Native Dancer through Shenanigans, of all mares.

Not with as big as Zenyatta is AND the heavy Blue Larkspur influence in her pedigree. The Factor x Zenyatta would be shades of Reviewer x Shenanigans.

Better to go back to War Front or one of his other sons.
  • Ahh OK so a good reason to avoid the Nearctic line being doubled up Thanks for the new info you two.
  • Actually it has nothing to do with Nearctic. Zenyatta doesn't have Nearctic in her pedigree.

Hmm was basing it off this which was typed above:
The Factor x Zenyatta: A+ with inbreeding to Mr. Prospector, Nearctic, and Forli.

Nearctic is on the top and bottom of The Factor's pedigree. Zenyatta doesn't have Nearctic in her pedigree.

    http://www.truenicks.com/free-reports/hypothetical-mating/display?stallionReferenceNumber=8332041&mareReferenceNumber=7156465&mareName=Zenyatta

So The Factor is doubled up on Nearctic. A The Factor x Zenyatta foal would not be doubled up on Nearctic.
  • It would still have the crosses, but just on sireline.
  • How interesting it is to decide on a breeding . It shows me they have to take all things into the picture. Even unseen things. Zenny's Foals by War front were amazing not to say the others weren't also good looking and I find Zellda a very nice foal as well. Be interesting to see if Zenny's Candy Ride filly looks as nice as Ebby's Candy Ride filly. Looking forward to next year and speaking good words for a safe and full term pregnancy for Zenny and Z20
  • I wish they'd go back to War Front, but being a horse person, and having been around racing owners and trainers, albeit not like Zenyen and others, the luck has not been good. If I were them, I probably would not. Maybe they can find a close parallel.

And Zenyatta may not be able to get on War Front's book, given the demand for his -ahem- services.
