Kauai Katie at home in Prioress
By Claire Novak | Bloodhorse Updated: July 25, 2013
Stonestreet Stables' Kauai Katie has not run at Saratoga Race Course since winning the Adirondack Stakes as a 2-year-old -- but she's 2-for-2 at the upstate oval, having broken her maiden at first asking there by 12 lengths.
On July 27 the Malibu Moon filly gets a chance to return to the winner's circle at the Spa, facing co-highweight So Many Ways among seven sophomore fillies entered in the $300,000 Prioress Stakes.
Kauai Katie carries 122 pounds off a third last time out in the May 27 Acorn Stakes. She stumbled at the start of the one-mile Belmont Park event and was seven lengths behind winner Midnight Lucky, suffering only her second defeat in eight starts.
Prior to the Acorn, Kauai Katie handily won the April 21 Road Princess Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack, that after a 5 ½-length victory for trainer Todd Pletcher in the Jan. 26 Forward Gal at Gulfstream Park. She is also the winner of the Old Hat Stakes and the Matron, her only other loss coming with a fourth in the Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.
Hall of Fame rider John Velazquez, who has been aboard for two of her six victories, gets the mount from the outside.

    Waiting for the why.

It seems she hasn't been herself lately in her races

Disappointed in Katie but still a big fan. Saw a tweet that Fifty Shades of Hay won a race today. Does anyone know which race and where?

Kauai Katie sprung a shoe and got some superficial cuts, nothing too serious. Thats why she didn't perform well

Graveyard of Champions victim Kauai Katie, who was heavily favored in yesterday's Prioress, lost a shoe during the Saratoga race.

At least KK seems OK. And at least there was a good reason but not a serious one. Hope she comes back from this and puts them away next time.
  • KK's loose shoe...reminds me of Uncle Mo's return race (Kings Bishop I think it was) where he had a shoe come loose and he came in 2nd. I saw pictures of that shoe just flopping around on his hoof. I was amazed that he didn't cut himself up. I heard that Katie actually did get some minor cuts. Scarey....

Rosario hurt on Friday….will he ride Orb in Travers?
    Friday, August 23, 2013 by:Tim Wilkin, staff writer Times-Union
SARATOGA SPRINGS — Dinny Phipps, who co-owns Kentucky Derby winner Orb with his cousin, Stuart Janney, hopes he doesn’t have to start calling jockeys Saturday morning. He hopes that Joel Rosario, who has ridden Orb in eight of his 10 starts, will be on board when the colt takes his place in the starting gate for the $1 million Travers Stakes.
Rosario was injured during Friday’s card at the Spa when his mount, Casual Elegance, tossed the rider at the finish line of the seventh race. Rosario lay motionless on the inner turf course for several minutes before getting up. He was limping when he was taken back to the jockey’s room via golf cart.
According to his agent, Ron Anderson, Rosario has a broken bone in his left foot after x-rays were taken at Saratoga Hospital. Rosario is scheduled to see a doctor on Saturday to find out if he can ride the Spa card

    2013 Test Stakes
    Published on Aug 24, 2013
Steve Beneto's Sweet Lulu shipped across the country, ran on dirt for the first time, tackled graded stakes company, and emerged victorious in the $500,000 Test Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga Race Course Aug. 24.
Trained by California-based Hall of Fame horseman Jerry Hollendorfer, the 3-year-old daughter of Mr. Greeley contested a hot pace with Victory Ride Stakes (gr. III) winner Baby J, put that one away turning for home, and fought on gamely to deny the challenge of Azelea Stakes (gr. III) winner Wildcat Lily by a head. Grade III winner My Happy Face closed with a rush to finish third by a neck after getting spun extremely wide
    on the turn.
Sweet Lulu completed the seven-furlong sprint for sophomore fillies in 1:23.45 on a fast track under jockey Julien Leparoux.

  • My Happy Face would have had the Test if she hadnt gotten pushed out 7 wide on the stretch
Watch her acceleration after getting pushed out, she definitely would have caught Lulu

EriNC I so agree. My Happy Face ran an extra furlong in this race.
So proud of her. On to the next. Keta
