  • Strong Mandate retired

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Strong Mandate, winner of the Grade 1 Hopeful last summer, has been retired because of a knee chip, trainer D. Wayne Lukas said Thursday.

Lukas said the nature of the injury would not have necessarily precluded Strong Mandate from racing again, but that owners Robert Baker and William Mack believed trying to go any further “would compromise his career as far as that caliber of racing,” said Lukas. “We had him diagnosed by Dr. (Larry) Bramlage. The owners agonized over it but came to their decision.”

Strong Mandate was eighth, beaten 21 1/2 lengths in the April 12 Arkansas Derby in his eighth and final start. The Kentucky-bred son of Tiznow, out of Clear Mandate, won twice and ran third in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at 2, then was second in the Southwest Stakes as best of three starts at 3.

No decision on a stud career has been made for the $200,000 yearling purchase, said Lukas.

“He’s out there,” said Lukas. “I’m sure a deal would start with Mr. Baker and we’d go from there.”

News of the retirement was first reported by the Courier-Journal

  • 2008 – This was supposed to be the year of Brown. Big Brown, the Florida Derby, Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner. Crank up the Triple Crown media circus. Fans either loved Big Brown or considered him a fraud because his controversial trainer admitted to giving the horse steroids. While on the drug, Big Brown was clearly superior to the Kentucky Derby and Preakness fields. Taken off of steroids before the Belmont Stakes plus fighting a quarter crack, Big Brown floundered in the beginning stages of the Belmont and was pulled up by his jockey. As media and fans watched in disbelief, DA' TARA, an unheralded son of Tiznow, stole the race by five lengths while the other jockeys were either taking a nap or looking around for Big Brown. Da' Tara never visited the winner's circle again but hit the board five more times in optional claiming races. In 2010 he sold for $180K as a racing or stallion prospect and eventually wound up at stud in South America.

  • Fury Kapcori - A horse I’ve long expected big things from, Kapcori has really begun to put things together in 2014. I even believe he is better than his second place finish in the Californian would suggest. That belief will be put to the test big time versus the Dude and the rest in Saturday’s Gold Cup at Santa Anita.
  • Tiz Town is running June 28th in a 2 year old maiden special weight going 6 furlongs at Churchill Downs. He will be ridden by Chris Landeros. He is trained by Ian Wilkes and owned by Marylou Whitney Stables LLC.

  • Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer's Fury Kapcori, who had a five-race winning streak snapped when finishing second at odds of 1-2 in the 1 1/8 miles Californian (gr. II), drew post position 2 and is expected to provide pace pressure to Game On Dude. Ridden by Corey Nakatani in the Californian, the 4-year-old colt by Tiznow will be handled in the Gold Cup for the first time by Gary Stevens.

With four wins and a second from five starts this year, Fury Kapcori has banked $218,800 in 2014 and will be going 1 1/4 miles for the first time. Owned by Rick Awtrey, Hollendorfer, and George Todaro, Fury Kapcori is 15-6-5-1 overall with earnings of $519,880.

  • Royal Son (Tiznow - Mama Nadine, by A.P. Indy) (C ) 4F :49.45 (5/35); Three of his half siblings have raced, one found the winners circle as a two year old. MAMA NADINE is a stakes winner and Royal Son’s second dam COUNTESS DIANA was a Champion Two Year Old Filly. I don’t expect Royal Son to be particularly precocious. He has the pedigree to handle Classic distances.
