Past the Grandstand: Horse racing through the eyes of a young racing fan

I began a blog about horse racing in August of 2011. The sport means SO much to me and plays an incredibly huge role in my life. From my own ex-racehorse, to my beloved Miss Fifty, to my love for so many characters in the racing world, to my hope for a future in the racing industry, horse racing owns a large part of my heart. And, of course, my very first blog post was about none other than Zenyatta. She is truly my favorite of all-time. Since that Zenyatta post, I have (so far) posted a total of 123 posts. I read the diary and have kept close tabs on Zenyatta since 2008. I loved the diary updates and am sad that they are gone, but love that Z fans are able to keep in touch through the forum. Occasionally, I would post links to my blog in comments on the diary. I hope none of you mind that I continue to do so! I'd love some feedback on whether or not you would like for me to keep posting links to my blog. If you've never read my blog, here's the link: http://pastthegrandstand.blogspot.com/
Thank you, everyone! Long live Queen Z!

  • What a beautiful Blog! I enjoyed it immensely. Keep up the good work.
  • Thank you so much!

  • Remember Zenyatta's first race??? Take a look, it was sweet.
I remember my (then) husband saying, "There's a great big filly at Hollywood Park named Zenyatta that looks like she's going to be a good one." After that I started watching her.
  • I always loved to read your blogs. Very well done. I look forward to your next one.
  • Thank you so much everyone! I guess I'll keep posting links to my blog on the forum :)

I published a new blog post this afternoon. It was my ninth top ten list for this year's running of the Kentucky Derby. I posted the first "Derby Top Ten" near the end of January, and as I expected, many things have changed since then! I hope you all will enjoy my ninth top ten list. And I would LOVE to hear what horses are in your top ten!

Love your blog...have watched out for Miss Fifty when I can...was so glad she got thru that awful mess at Charlestown a while back
  • Yes!!! Definitely, Mary, please keep posting the links to your blog here so many more people can have a chance to read it. You are already showing such a gift for writing and I wish you continued success. One of your faithful followers,
  • Great top ten list. I also like Union Rags. Really liked the pic of Smarty Jones.
  • Thank you so much for your kind words everyone!

Thanks! I took that picture of Smarty Jones the very first time I saw him, back in 2007. He was my Zenyatta before she came along.

What do you know, I have a new blog post :) The entries for the Dubai World Cup came out today and I did a field analysis, spotlighting each horse entered. I hope you will all enjoy. Who do you like in this year's DWC?

  • Loved your DWC blog! I was impressed with the background information you gave us for each horse - words help me so much more than just numbers on a past performances sheet. Their chances may not be the very best, but my heart will be hoping for a win by Royal Delta or Game On Dude, leaning heavily in the filly's favor. But what an accomplishment if Game On Dude could win it for Chantal and for Bob Baffert!

Thank you! I'll definitely be pulling for the Americans as well. As much as I absolutely adore Royal Delta, I will likely be cheering for Game on Dude and not just because of his connections, but because I've seen him in person several times and he seems like a really neat horse! I would love to see them both do well!

  • You blog indicates that you are a gifted writer. Racing can use all of the young fans it can get. When I first read your blog, I did not know how old you were. Now that I know, I am even more impressed, if that is possible. keep up the good work.
  • Job well done! Very good work. I cannot imagine shipping a horse that distance, but no one asked me. I know it is done all the time.
  • Thank you so much everyone! It really means a lot to me that you enjoy my blog.

Well, the Americans didn't fare well in the DWC, but I certainly wasn't surprised by Monterosso's win. What did you think of the Dubai World Cup?

    Dear PastTheGrandstand:

Your Blog is wonderful, but the story of Be Bop Baby really got to me. What a courageous, lovely girl she is. Remember Me is a very good rescue. I'm so happy she is on her way to a good life. Hugs, JB

Thank you so much! Be Bop is such a sweet girl and my friends at Remember Me take such great care of her.

Well, oh my, it's been a busy day. Went to an under-tack show for a Fasig-Tipton sale today (the same one where I met Miss Fifty two years ago). Well, ironically, I ended up falling in love with hip fifty again! Anyways, I will post a very detailed blog post about it tomorrow. I have been looking forward to this post for so very long now, as sales are one of my absolute favorite events to cover, especially this specific sale.

I also posted another blog post today, my tenth Derby Top Ten! I was so sad to have to move Union Rags down, but I'd say Creative Cause just barely has him beat on this list - it was a very tight photo finish! Check it out here:

  • Wow, Thanks Grandstand. Love the Blog site. I will have some good reads later.
