  • His son Puppy Manners is running the the El Camino Real Derby on Saturday at Golden Gate: Puppy Manners – He is the “other” Hollendorfer in the race. I am going to give him a chance on the win end today on the basis of he owns a pair of victories on this track, and that I believe he should like the distance. In his last race, the Cal Derby, I thought he closed well enough while up against a slow pace. I think he has a shot in here, albeit a small one

  • From Ramsey Farm facebook: Yesterday at the OBS Sale Hip 228 a colt by Kitten’s Joy out of Lastofthsummerwine sold for $475,000!
He was consigned by Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds LLC, agent
and purchased by Conquest Stables. Dean De Renzo and Randy Hartley acquired this Ramsey-bred colt for $125,000 at FTSAUG. His breeze in :10 bolstered his price this time around. He was picked up for $475,000 by Conquest Stables, which purchased GI Kentucky Derby hopeful and GII Holy Bull S. runner-up Conquest Titan (Birdstone).
  • Received an alert on my virual stables today for the 2yr. old Kitten's Joy colt I named, Wayward Kitten's first work at Turfway 3f. 36:80 breeze.
I was very surprised. Isn't this kinda young still?

Nope, not for a 2 yr old. Theyre horses of racing age. If theyre precocious theyll race soon after having a couple works in

rachel, Does that mean I might be seeing the other 2yr olds in my stable with works soon? Like Coz, Taco & Chili ?
  • Im not sure about Taco and Chili, but Coz probably wont be doing any recorded works anytime soon, hes not precocious.

There's a difference between having a timed work and racing. Two-year-olds ought to be out on the track. That's how they learn, build cardiovascular fitness, and increase bone density. None of this happens if they don't run. The key is to build gradually up to racing speeds and distances. Since they are out there anyway, they might as well have the work timed. And 3f is a short workout, and the time was not that fast. He's not being pushed unduly. IIRC, Ebby was at John's barn and had recorded works for a long time before she started.

Most of the 2-year-old races start the second half of the year, in July, and short races are available. I've seen a few baby races written for earlier in the year, but these had a requirement that the horse be chronologically 2. There is no reason that a sufficiently mature, properly conditioned and trained 2-year-old should not race. Statistics show that horses that start as juveniles have longer careers and fewer breakdowns. In days of yore, when horses were run several times a week and not cooped up in their stalls all the time or given Lasix, good juveniles made many starts. Secretariat was Horse of the Year at 2, having made 9 starts and winning 7 in the space of six months. His closest rival for HotY, La Prevoyante, was a 2-year-old filly. She made 12 starts.
  • Wow. Very interesting info. Thanks for posting, lauraj_cincinnati.
  • Thanks for the explaination, lauraj_ cincinnati, I thought it was a little early in the year for the 2yr. old races to be starting. July sounds about right.
  • From Ramsey Farm facebook: Far Isle colt by Kitten's Joy. He is a pretty nice fella. https://scontent-a-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc3/t1/s526x395/1613972_629550160451275_1792367444_n.jpg

Wow! As soon as I read your comment I checked my notices to see if there were any recorded work outs for Jolly Good Kitten. Nope. To think that Wayward Kitten might make a start this summer, very cool!
  • Bobby’s Kitten (Kitten’s Joy - Celestial Woods, by Forestry) Chad Brown – Arguably America’s best juvenile turf horse in 2013, this Kitten came back to purr with a facile score in a Gulfstream Park allowance on March 8. It was a good start to the season, and it reaffirmed his strong form from last year. It was on turf, though, meaning he has yet to run on anything but the grass. That is reported to be about to change in his next start, as Keeneland’s Blue Grass is likely on his dance card. A good performance there would provide him the points he needs, and at least show that he can run well on a surface other than turf. We already know he fits with his class, there is every reason to believe that he would be able to handle the stretchout in distance, and you just know that Ramsey will not shy away from giving him the shot. One last parting thought on this one; I consider the Churchill Downs main track to be as friendly to turf runners as any dirt course in the United States.
