  • Mandy Pope really seems to have her eye out for top fillies/mares. It looks like depth in the dam's side makes a lot of difference at these sales.

She's said many times she's trying to build up a top notch broodmare group. She is well on her way.

Hip 1534, half-sister to Hansen. Sells for $130,000.

I was surprised at the low winning bid, until I saw the dam’s side. I didn't realize, that except for Hansen, going back to his fourth dam, there is no black-type on his maternal side, (don't know what there is after the fourth dam).

Looks like the burden is on Stormy Sunday to keep her female family alive.

    1st dam
STORMY SUNDAY, by Sir Cat. 3 wins in 4 starts at 3, $33,046. Dam of 3 other
registered foals, 3 of racing age, 3 to race, 2 winners--

    S. [G1] (KEE, $150,000), Holy Bull S. [G3] (GP, $80,000).

    Tapanna (g. by Tapit). 4 wins at 3 and 4, placed at 5, 2013, $83,393.

    Gunderson (c. by Corinthian). Placed at 3, 2013, $5,695.

    2nd dam
THINKIN'STRAIT, by Highland Park. Winner at 3 and 4, $14,042. Dam of 4
other foals, 2 to race, both winners--
Isabella Monique. Winner at 3, $16,333.
Fast and Strait. Winner at 3 and 4, $15,854.

    3rd dam
TESCUDERA, by Temperence Hill. Placed at 3, $5,800. Dam of 1 foal, above.

    4th dam

    race--
    Pleasant Evening. 3 wins at 2 and 3, $66,120.

The sire of Hansen’s half-sister is Act of War.

Act of War doesn’t have much to recommend either:

By ACT OF WAR (1998). Black-type winner of 9 races, 2 to 9, $406,696, Cardinal

  • Keeneland Sale Continues to Soar on Day 7
By Glenye Cain Oakford The Blood-Horse
    Updated: Tuesday, September 17, 2013 8:32 AM
Propelled by continuing demand for yearlings, the 2013 Keeneland September yearling sale ended its seventh session Sept. 16 with more gross sales than the entire sale achieved in 11 days last year.
By 12:30 p.m. on Monday at the 2013 sale's seventh session, the gross had zoomed past last year's 11-day total of $219,781,500. When the final hammer fell on the session at 7:54 p.m. (EDT), the 2013 auction's total sales stood at $236,874,000—and there are still five days' worth of horses yet to enter the auction ring.

Doesn't it seem funny that STORMY SUNDAY went from being bred to Tapit to a $1,000 fee sire who only has 9 foals? I wonder if she is in foal for 2014, and if so to who.
