What a fantastic final crop for AP Indy! Only 36 named foals and he managed multiple G1 winner Honor Code, newly minted G1 winner Got Lucky, multiple GSW Commissioner, multiple GSP America, GSP Arethusa, GSP Divided Attention, and multiple SW Tacticus (RIP). Pretty incredible!
Tom Hall on Sunday Oct. 4 2015 New G1SW for A.P. Indy: Got Lucky, 4yof o/o Deputy Minister mare Malka wins gr1 Spinster S at KEE; a clutch of blue hens in this family
How Got Lucky got her name is kinda amusing, too. It took more than one trip to the breeding shed before A P Indy --- well --- fired more than blanks. On the fifth try they "Got Lucky" and got their AP Indy foal. The mare, Malka certainly showed "patience" and the owners were obviously "determined" --- those would have been good names, too!
Is Got Lucky Malka's last foal? They said she died from a rare form of cancer.
They thought it was a good tribute to Malka's dam, Get Lucky, as well ;-)
Not quite, she had one more after Got Lucky, a filly by Smart Strike named Lucky Number. It is really tragic about Malka, she was only 9 when she passed and comes from such a great blue hen family. Hopefully her girls can pick up where she left off. Nice article about Got Lucky and family:
"She was born and raised on the farm," Sikura said. "We bred (the mare) to A.P. Indy, I think, five times in his last year and this is how she got the name. My partner Phil said, 'Do you think we should quit?' And I said, 'No, we'll go to the end. We've gone this far, we'll take our chances.'
"The mare died of a very rare cancer, so it's a great reward to have a filly like this from the last crop of a great stallion and a really good family we raised." http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/94901/got-lucky-rallies-to-spinster-score Hope Got Lucky runs in the BC Distaff. With Beholder running in the Classic, it should be Untapable's race to win if she has a good day. I do think she ran better with Rosie up but if she listens to Johnny V she could run a big race. If not, I would love to see one of AP Indy's last crop fillies take it at the wire!
PICASSO LIVES AT LANE’S END: A. P. INDY Ireland has her Galileo, but almost a decade before he came along, A.P. Indy was born. His courage on the track dazzled us. And his contribution to the development of the North American thoroughbred has been beyond brilliant. They're out there, the Indys are simply what's doing the best. There will ALWAYS be a dominant line. IMO significantly better than when the Storm Cats were leading . . . Sounder lines in general.

Children of Secretariat: extraordinary daughter who left a major legacy Patricia McQueen Thoroughbrd Racing May 16, 2016 As part of this occasional series, Patricia McQueen examines the career of a mare who guaranteed Secretariat would have a major influence on the breed - and whose offspring included Preakness winner Summer Squall and supersire A.P. Indy. Secretariat may have sired only one American classic winner – Risen Star – but through his amazing daughters he has had a much more pronounced impact on the Triple Crown races. The stakes-winning filly Weekend Surprise, an earner of $402,892 in 31 starts, produced not just one but two classic winners, earning her the prestigious Kentucky Broodmare of the Year award in 1992. https://www.thoroughbredracing.com/articles/children-secretariat-extraordinary-daughter-who-left-major-legacy From article: Weekend Surprise was said to carry a gene for a large heart, passed through both from Secretariat, who had an unusually large heart, and from her dam as well. This so-called “X-factor” was extensively studied by author Marianna Haun, who passed away in February. Haun was convinced that the large heart gene is passed along female lines on the X chromosome and could be traced back for generations.
