@Keta facinating story on Robyn Smith Astaire. After I read the link you posted, I read a bio on Fred Astaire --- I had no idea he was involved in thoroughbred horse racing. He owned a racehorse named Triplicate who won the Hollywood Gold cup and San Capistrano Handicap in 1946. His late in life marriage to Robyn Smith was many years after the death of his wife, Phyllis, and his children were grown with children of their own. He broke his wrist at age 78 while attempting to ride his grandson's skateboard! He married Robyn Smith when he was 81 years old, 45 year age different, and he died at age 88. His daughter, Ava, apparently manages his estate and Robyn still lives in their Beverly Hills home. He was a savvy business man by all accounts, so I would assume his will was explicit and left all his heirs, including Robyn Smith, financially secure.
KMM asked "How do the female jockeys get assigned the horses? How does this contest work?"

"remember those who paved the way before her and the sacrifices they made. They all were true pathfinders." Long, Hard Struggle For Female Jockeys Hangin' With Haskin The Blood-Horse 11 July, 2017 When Diane Nelson passed away on July 5 at age 54, her days riding regularly on the tough New York circuit were long forgotten by many. But those who followed racing in the Big Apple on a daily basis remember her as a top rider, who like so many females before her, was never given the opportunity to ride world class horses and compete in championship races on a regular basis. Nelson is remembered as being stunningly attractive and very affable who had signed a contract with the Ford Modeling Agency. But on the racetrack she was talented enough to win almost 1,100 races, while bankrolling over $19 million in earnings and winning eight graded stakes, including the the grade 1 Prioress Stakes and grade 2 Comely Stakes aboard Acey Deucy in 2005. http://cs.bloodhorse.com/blogs/horse-racing-steve-haskin/archive/2017/07/11/long-hard-struggle-for-female-jockeys.aspx

I didn't see this comment back in September. Candice is a wonderful commentator and analyst of horse racing. She really has a keen understanding of all things race shape and placement, condition...everything. Her international coverage is better then any. Love her
