    Lava Lei, 6/8, at Thistledown
  • I understand Gary Contessa has had quite a few horse deaths recently, like 10 in the past four years.

Hate when fatalities come in bunches. We seem to get a day or two off from this thread and then it hits. RIP

Ethan John went down right after crossing the wire in race one at Suffolk. It didn't look good. If anyone knows his status, please update us.

I haven't noticed any "days off." I keep hoping.

    Treve set for thorough check-up
At The Races 19 Jun 2014
Superstar filly Treve will undergo a thorough examination after returning to France on Friday following her disappointing display in the Prince of Wales's Stakes.
Last year's stunning Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe heroine lost her unbeaten record at the hands of multiple Group One-winning compatriot Cirrus Des Aigles in the Prix Ganay at Longchamp at the end of April, but was fully expected to return to her brilliant best at Royal Ascot.

    Excerpts from article:
Harry Herbert, racing advisor for owners Al Shaqab Racing, has speculated Treve may have pulled a muscle before taking to the famous Ascot turf.

She got a bit het up in the pre-parade ring and got up on her hind legs a couple of times and got a bit upset. Whether she tweaked a muscle doing that, I don't know.

6/12 - Bear's Spirit - Injured during training at Aqueduct
*******6/14 - Point Taken - Septic arthritis at Belmont ******** (I am shocked at this death, it was never reported and still isnt (by the big name racehorse websites)....until now by In Memory Of Our Racehorses Facebook Page and by me. I dont know where the FB Page gets their info)
6/18 - Fran's Kid - Fractured leg during training at Belmont

Point Taken: has not raced since January 13, 2014 at Aqueduct (finished 7th)

    Jockey: Irad Ortiz, Jr.
    Trainer: Rudy R. Rodriguez
Owner: Dubb, Michael, Bethlehem Stables LLC and Aisquith, Gary
    Breeder: David Allen
    http://www.equibase.com/profiles/Results.cfm?type=Horse&refno=8598971&registry=T

    Fran's Kid:

2 year old Desert Party colt that had yet to even race.

per Horseracing Wrong's website, i cringe at the way its written but this is the only info i have on this horse: "Yesterday, a 2-year-old unraced colt named Fran’s Kid snapped a leg “breezing” at Belmont and was euthanized on-track. Fortunately, the Gaming Commission reports, he was insured. Racing’s depravity never ceases to amaze. For trainer Leo O’Brien, this makes eight dead athletes since 2010."
  • Well, @Rachel, I can certainly see why you'd cringe at those words. Makes my stomach turn.

With Sherman's name being in here, i dont think its a bad thing. I think what happened was the horse got injured in the race and the claim was voided because the horse appeard unsound. I highly doubt Sherman would put an injured horse in a race.

  • I saw there was a horrific collision between two racehorses at Santa Anita this morning on the training track and the track was closed until further notice; however, I don't know who the horses or riders were or conditions of either.

Can't find any news on that accident at Santa Anita. The track is open and they are racing on schedule. Any more info?

well if it was a morning training accident the track wouldnt be closed all day long. it would only be closed temporarily for the ambulance and horse ambulance to get through and to remove the horse bodies if the horses are dead.

Death of Tiger Cliff raises fatalities to three at Royal Ascot
    • Favourite in final race at the meeting collapses at finish
    • Two horses were also killed on first day of meeting
Chris Cook at Ascot The Observer, Saturday 21 June 2014
For the second consecutive year, the final day’s action here was marred by an equine fatality when Tiger Cliff, ridden by Tom Queally, collapsed shortly after passing the post in fourth place in the final race, the Queen Alexandra. That brought to three the number of horses that have died here this week, following two that broke bones and were euthanised on Tuesday.
“As with the two deaths earlier in the week, this is very, very sad and certainly not a good way to end the meeting,” said Ascot’s spokesman, Nick Smith. “However, there is always going to be some risk associated with the sport and there’s no implications on the track or track management.”
Jenny Hall, a British Horseracing Authority vet, attended Tiger Cliff on the scene and reported that this was a case of sudden death, possibly caused by a heart attack. She said that, as with humans, who can also die suddenly when young, fit and outwardly healthy, there is no complete understanding of the causes or predisposing factors.
    Later in article
The two horses that died on Tuesday were Sir Graham Wade, who fractured a pelvis, and Case Statement, who fractured a fetlock. Smith said at the time that the injuries “could have happened anywhere” and there was no reason to believe they were caused by anything specific to Ascot. Almost 500 horses ran at Ascot over the past five days.

We'll be hearing about this on Horseracing Wrongs, all talk but literally nothing being done about it *rolls eyes* i am totally done with that website. You really cant help a heartattack adn you know its not drugs cuz the UK is super strict about Lasix, if allowing it at all.
  • Unfortunately, they're one of the few places on twitter that posts horse deaths. The Worldwide Memorial left twitter because they didn't like the new format. That kind of depressed me, but oh well, whatever floats your boat.
