  • Stevens Bridges Del Mar's
    Dual Hall Of Fame Foursomes

By Hank Wesch Del Mar News 11/15/14
For the second time in its history, Del Mar has four current Hall of Fame riders in its jockey colony.
Gary Stevens is the linchpin, the connecting thread, the common denominator. And, as he will tell you, proudly so.
Stevens was elected to the National Thoroughbred Racing Museum and Hall of Fame in 1997. Upon gaining membership, he joined a trio of Del Mar regulars who had held that status for years. There was Laffit Pincay, Jr., a Hall of Fame member since 1975; Chris McCarron (Class of 1989), and Eddie Delahoussaye (1993).

With Stevens, 51, back in the fold, plus the return in the past months of prodigal sons Kent Desormeaux and Alex Solis, as well as the continued presence since 2001 of Mike Smith, Del Mar has another Hall of Fame quartet for fans to appreciate and bettors to consider. Smith was inducted into the Hall in 2003 and Desormeaux the following year, while Solis gained entry last summer.
Entering racing this week, the Hall of Fame quartet had combined for
94,947 races ridden, 15,835 wins and $749,693,822 in purse earnings.

Wow! Gary Stevens had a lot of "guts" squeezing through that gap at the inside rails at Santa Anita race 9-Sweet Life Stakes (Downhill Turf). He was aboard Bobbi Grace-IRE (2) but could not take the lead away from the grey...She's a Big Winner (10) ridden by B. Blanc. Gary & Bobbi Grace came in a proud 2nd. That was scarey to watch, but the announcer said that was his only option being stuck at the inside rails...and he recently had replacement knee surgery too!
  • Two Taps is running April 11th in a maiden special weight for fillies and mares 3 years old and upward going about 6 1/2 furlongs on turf at Santa Anita. She will be ridden by Gary Stevens. She is trained by John Shirreffs and owned by Farish or Mooney Stables LLC.
  • Baffert horses run 1-2 in Los Al Futurity
    Jonathan Lintner Courier-Journal December 19, 2015
Second in the slop last time out at Churchill Downs, Mor Spirit thrived Saturday over a fast track.
The 2-year-old colt bided his time, then pounced in the stretch to overtake Bob Baffert stablemate Toews On Ice in the Grade I, $350,000 Los Alamitos Futurity.
Baffert again appears to have another pair of leading Kentucky Derby contenders in Saturday's top-two finishers. He touted Mor Spirit as one of his barn's best before American Pharoah's run at the Breeders' Cup Classic, while Toews On Ice went into the Futurity having won three straight stakes.
    From article:
With veteran jockey Gary Stevens aboard, Mor Spirit, a son of Eskendereya, covered 1 1/6 miles in 1:43.54. The race favorite returned $3.40.

  • Gary Stevens will be on Om for the Mathis Brothers Mile, he's on Runhappy for the Malibu.
  • Thanks. Mixed them up. Two good rides that day.:)
  • Big Gary Stevens fan and am happy he is riding well after his latest injury. He's a tough dude. But...on this particular day, I wouldn't mind him riding for fun, keeping his horses safe and coming in out of the money.
Love ya Gary...take the day off.

Beholder Wins Battle of Champions in Vanity Mile
June 4th, 2016 by Jeremy Balan Content provided by Blood-horse
Regardless of the competition or the distance, Spendthrift Farm’s Beholder just keeps rolling along.
In the $400,000 Vanity Mile Stakes on a hot day on June 4 at Santa Anita Park, the three-time champion only broke a sweat because of the nearly 90-degree temperatures in Arcadia, Calif.
Cutting back in distance to a mile for the first time since September 2013, the daughter of Henny Hughes raced just off leisurely fractions set by Lost Bus. Beholder took command without any asking from Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens on the final turn and effortlessly held off a late rally from fellow champion Stellar Wind to win by 1 1/2 lengths.
Stevens guided the 6-year-old mare past the finish line in 1:35.97 on a fast main track for her eighth straight win, all in stakes competition. She now has 10 Grade 1 victories for Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella.
  • Stevens Headed To Oaklawn For ‘More Money, More Opportunities’
by Paulick Report Staff | 11.08.2016
Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens has announced that he will move his tack to Oaklawn Park for their winter season, according to the Daily Racing Form. Stevens will first ride the autumn meeting at Del Mar, heading to Arkansas before opening day on Jan. 13.
“It's more money, more opportunities and more horses,” said Stevens. “I don't have a lot of business.”
Stevens finished 14th in Santa Anita's standings for the most recent meet, racking up just five wins from 41 starts. He finished second seven times, and third an additional 10 times. One of his victories, of course, came aboard champion Beholder in the Breeders' Cup Distaff in her final career race.
