  • California Preparing Riding Crop Rule Change
By Frank Angst The Blood-Horse September 3, 2014
A rule that would limit use of the riding crop by jockeys during races is expected to be put in place at the upcoming 24-day Santa Anita Park autumn meet to begin Sept. 26.
Jockeys' Guild regional manager Darrell Haire said industry leaders and regulators in California have been working since May to put in place a new rule on use of the riding crop by jockeys during races. He said the new rule would limit jockeys to hitting the horse a maximum of three times before taking time off to see how the horse reacts.

  • Del Mar Fall Meet Offers 14 Stakes
    During 15-Day November Run

Del Mar Newsletter September 17, 2014
Fourteen stakes races – nine of them graded – will serve as the touchstones for Del Mar’s new November race meeting opening Friday, November 7 for a 15-day run through Sunday, November 30. The total value of the stakes package is $2,250,000.
The seaside track picked up a majority of the racing dates from the fall meeting at the now-closed Hollywood Park and in the process transferred over many of that track’s major stakes events. The Hollywood session had an emphasis on turf racing and Del Mar is carrying that forward with nine turf stakes on its agenda, including its two top offerings – the $300,000 Hollywood Derby and the $300,000 Matriarch, both Grade I events that will be run on closing weekend, which is part of the long Thanksgiving holiday.

  • Q&A with Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith
By Sarah Favot, Pasadena Star-News Posted: 09/24/14
ARCADIA>> When it comes to the big money, high-pressure races, Santa Anita’s Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith is unmatchable.
Smith, 49, has won more Breeders’ Cup races than any other jockey — and is hoping to add to the total during this year’s Breeders’ Cup, the world championships of horseracing. Anomg his mounts in 2014 will be Shared Belief. A gelding owned in part by radio personality Jim Rome, Shared Belief could face Kentucky Derby winner California Chrome in the meet’s highlight: The Breeder’s Cup Classic.
Smith recently sat down for an interview after a morning work-out at Santa Anita’s Clockers’ Corner. He says he’s at the top of his game and explained how he handles himself when the stakes are high and all eyes are on the finish line.

  • Espinoza suspended seven days for Awesome Again ride
By Steve Andersen Daily Racing Form 09/28/2014 5:07PM
ARCADIA, Calif. – Jockey Victor Espinoza was suspended seven days by Santa Anita stewards Sunday for causing interference aboard Sky Kingdom in Saturday’s Grade 1 Awesome Again Stakes.
Espinoza was sanctioned for allowing Sky Kingdom to drift wide on the first turn, carrying the 1-5 favorite Shared Belief four wide. The incident was the subject of widespread discussion after the race, which was won by Shared Belief.
Stewards Scott Chaney, Kim Sawyer, and Tom Ward issued a suspension Sunday, citing Espinoza for violation of two rules – jockeys riding “carelessly, or willfully, so as to permit their mount to interfere with or impede any other horse” and a rule pertaining to unsatisfactory rides.
Brian Beach, Espinoza’s agent, said Sunday afternoon that Espinoza may appeal the decision and that the rider would seek legal advice in the next few days.

  • It was a bad day yesterday for dirty riding. I usually get the whole, "that's racing" thing.. sometimes a horse veers, they clip heels, etc. The jockeys are in board an animal that does have a mind of it's own, and sometimes it's an unavoidable situation.. I get it. But yesterday, Alvarado and Espinoza showed no class at all. Espinoza against the betting public, and Alvarado is lucky that Maragh "only" broke his arm. It could have been a much more serious incident.

  • Update: Kent Desormeaux Out of Hospital, Home Nursing Injuries
    Update: 10-1-14
Jockey Kent Desormeaux is out of the hospital and home nursing the rib and lung injuries he suffered in a violent mishap at Santa Anita last Sunday. The 44-year old jockey was kicked in the chest by a horse that had just unseated him during the post parade before a race.
Desormeaux spent two days in Arcadia Methodist Hospital with broken ribs and a bruised lung. He was released Tuesday evening and while his prognosis is good, it has still not been determined when Desormeaux will return to the races.
