If all goes well Cairo Prince should be back for a successful late summer / fall campaign.
  • Kentucky Derby 140: Backside Buzz with Jill Byrne 4.24.14:
  • PABLO DEL MONTE (No. 22) -- Susan Magnier, Derrick Smith, Michael Tabor and trainer Wesley Ward’s Pablo Del Monte worked six furlongs in 1:11.20 in company Saturday morning at Keeneland.

John Velazquez rode Pablo Del Monte, who worked in company with High Wire Kitten.

“We broke him off about 15 lengths behind (High Wire Kitten) today, and he kinda creeped up on her and got her at the wire,” Ward told the Keeneland publicity office. “The time was maybe a little quicker than I wanted, but he had a nice breeze.”

Clockers caught Pablo Del Monte in fractions of :47.60, 1:11.20 and out in 1:25.

Ward said Pablo Del Monte likely would ship to Churchill Downs Tuesday evening. If the connections of horses with more points opt not to enter Wednesday, Pablo Del Monte could find a place in the starting gate and become Ward’s first starter in the race.

“It looks like we are waiting for the Preakness (G1), still,” he said, “but you gotta be there and be ready. It would be an honor to be in the race, especially with a horse like him. He just ran a valiant race (in the Blue Grass). (Churchill is) sort of a speed-favoring track, so you gotta be ready. With him being a front-runner, he probably would be on the lead in the race. If you could win or run second or third in the Kentucky Derby, it would just be the thrill of a lifetime.”
  • Vinceremos - If the Blue Grass and Polytrack is a complete draw a line through it, and if he is still improving, and if can hit the eighth pole in with a chance, and if none of the favorites run their best race ... then maybe he can game it out to the wire.
  • Kentucky Derby 140: Backside Buzz with Jill Byrne:

  • "I'm going to be especially interested in seeing Vinceremos' work. That might give us a good idea (whether he'll run)," Pletcher said. "We're sitting tight on a rider. It could be one of these big name guys might come available in the next day or two if we do decide to go."
  • Vinceremos: Working inside of Danza, four furlongs in :49, out five furlongs in 1:02. Splits were :12 4/5 and :25.

  • Joe Rocco Jr. will ride Vinceremos in Kentucky Derby, per Elliott Walden, president of WinStar farm.

Kentucky Derby 140: Backside Buzz with Jill Byrne:
  • Pletcher had indicated he wanted to see a good drill for Vinceremos Sunday if he was to be seriously considered for a Derby run. It appears he got it.

“Vinceremos’ work was good,” he said. “He did well enough for us to consider it (a start in Derby 140).”

Following training hours, WinStar Farm president Elliott Walden told Daily Racing Form that Joe Rocco Jr. would have the Derby mount on Vinceremos.
  • SOCIAL INCLUSION (No. 22) – Rontos Racing Stable’s Social Inclusion is scheduled to breeze Monday at Gulfstream Park after galloping Sunday.

With the defections of Ring Weekend and Bayern from the Kentucky Derby picture. Social Inclusion would need two more withdrawals to vault into the top 20 point producers and a spot in the starting gate for Derby 140.

“We will breeze tomorrow and make a decision tomorrow afternoon,” owner Ronald Sanchez said.

“If he is 21 on the list, we would probably ship.”
  • Vinceremos has shown in his races how tough he is to pass. He likes coming back at his opponents, and you could see him trying to come back at Danza in the gallop-out, which was negotiated by both horses in :13 flat, with Danza pulling up six furlongs in 1:16.

  • Machmer Hall also bred Derby contender Vinceremos, another good-looking youngster who now races for WinStar Farm and Twin Creeks Racing.

"Lovely horse," Brogden said of Vinceremos. "Very striking physical, big, strong, easy-walking colt, always very uncomplicated."

Brogden identified "a big common denominator" for all of the graded stakes-caliber runners she has raised: "they all had very good constitutions, and they all had very good immune systems. They weren't constantly being sick, or getting coughs -- very straightforward horses."

Brogden further described her philosophy of raising horses. When baby colts are allowed to engage in their rough-housing style of play, it builds up strong bones -- and minds.

"This is the time where they learn to fight; this is the time where they learn to be strong," Brogden said. "In the end, when they're gutting it out on the track, and there's horses on this side and horses on that side, and they have to go through a small hole, they're going to be used to those tight quarters, and I think that's a good part of becoming a racehorse. I really, truly believe that."
  • Kentucky Derby Trainer Todd Pletcher talks to TVG about his 2014 contenders:
  • 13th - #9 – Vinceremos
Trainer / Jockey (Derby Mounts W-P-S): Todd Pletcher / Joe Rocco, Jr. (1st Derby)
    Running Style: Mid-Pack
Why he COULD win the Derby: If you toss his last race, the Blue Grass Stakes, his first time on synthetic, then how can you overlook this horse? Never worse than second in 4 previous races and is bred to handle the classic distance.
Why he SHOULD NOT be able to win the Derby: Based on the Brisnet speed figures, he is by far the slowest in the field. On Sunday, in his only workout at CD (4f; 49.00) he visually struggled and was constantly asked for more from the exercise rider.
Early Betting Odds : 38-1 compared to Morning Line Odds: 30-1
  • i have seen Vinceremos workout live at the track i was NOT IMPRESSED AT ALL i dont think that he will have a shot
