Royal Ascot 2014: The Fugue storms to victory as inquest into Treve flop begins

Tough filly The Fugue gains reward in Prince of Wales's Stakes but huge question marks hang over French filly who was a shadow of her brilliant self
By JA McGrath, Royal Ascot The Telegraph 18 Jun 2014
Criquette Head-Maarek will explore all veterinary avenues in an exhaustive attempt find a reason for Treve’s disappointing third in yesterday’s Prince Of Wales’s Stakes, which left the second day Royal Ascot crowd of 40,459 deflated and poorer for the experience. “She was never in the comfort zone,” reported jockey Frankie Dettori.
A scratchy action when moving to post was the first indication that all was not right with last year’s brilliant Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner, and once the race commenced, it became obvious she was going to struggle against such a strong field.

    Treve set for thorough check-up
At The Races 19 Jun 2014
Superstar filly Treve will undergo a thorough examination after returning to France on Friday following her disappointing display in the Prince of Wales's Stakes.
Last year's stunning Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe heroine lost her unbeaten record at the hands of multiple Group One-winning compatriot Cirrus Des Aigles in the Prix Ganay at Longchamp at the end of April, but was fully expected to return to her brilliant best at Royal Ascot.
    Excerpts from article:
Harry Herbert, racing advisor for owners Al Shaqab Racing, has speculated Treve may have pulled a muscle before taking to the famous Ascot turf.

She got a bit het up in the pre-parade ring and got up on her hind legs a couple of times and got a bit upset. Whether she tweaked a muscle doing that, I don't know.
  • From Ramsey Farm facebook: On Saturday Crown The Kitten with Victor Espinoza up will run in The Chesham Stakes at Ascot Racecourse. You can watch on either TVG or HRTV at 9:30am EST. Crown The Kitten is trained by Wesley Ward who has already had a winner at the Ascot meet this year. We have run at Royal Ascot before but never had a winner...hopefully that will change!

    Suspensions at Ascot
Thoroughbred News 20 Jun 2014 | Ascot Racecourse
Joseph O'Brien has been banned for a total of nine days following two separate incidences with the whip on Thursday at Royal Ascot.
Following the Gold Cup, the stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Joseph O'Brien, the rider of the winner, Leading Light, from three furlongs out.
Having heard his evidence and after viewing a recording of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he used his whip above the permitted level. The stewards suspended O'Brien for seven days as follows: Thursday 3rd, Friday 4th, Saturday 5th, Sunday 6th, Monday 7th, Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th July 2014. Under rule (B)54, they also fined O'Brien £3,000.
The stewards also held an enquiry into the use of the whip by O'Brien on Carlo Bugatti (placed 7th) from two and a half furlongs out in the King George V Handicap.
Having heard his evidence and after viewing a recording of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he used his whip above the permitted level. They suspended O'Brien for a further two days as follows: Thursday 10th and Monday 14th July 2014.

Keta Note: Really would like to similar rules & disciplinary action in USA racing.
Too many times I watch a race where a jockey is using a whip when the race is won and/or the horse has no chance of winning.

    Excerpt from Thoroughbred News article:
The stewards also noted that the Gold Cup winner, Leading Light, had interfered with Brown Panther (placed 4th), who then interfered with Estimate (placed 2nd), who then interfered with Missunited (placed 3rd) approaching the furlong market. After viewing a recording of the incident, they were satisfied that it neither involved a riding offence nor improved Leading Light's position.

    The Fugue breaks course record
    Brisnet Updated: June 19, 2014
A crowd of 40,459 was on hand Wednesday for day two of Royal Ascot, up from the 38,758 last year probably due in part to the participation of Treve in the Group 1 Prince of Wales's Stakes.
Three fillies entered against five males in the race but, instead of the French superstar schooling her rivals, Lord Lloyd-Webber's The Fugue stepped up to win in thrilling style when breaking the Ascot 10-furlong course record in 2:01.90. The previous record of 2:02.52 was achieved by Cirrus des Aigles in the 2011 Champion Stakes.
"We did genuinely think that we were going to let her have a stroll round the park," Lord Lloyd-Webber remarked. "Nobody believed that she would quite do this but it's the best racing day in our whole racing career."
